This package covers popular destinations in the west and take you further east, seldom visited by tourists. You will pass through many secluded communities leading simple lifestyle as you make your way from the west to the east. As you venture east, the tour is less about tourist attractions and more about the experience of going on a road trip across Bhutan.
Day 1: Arrival in Paro – Thimphu
Upon arrival in Paro, you will be greeted by your guide and driver. Begin your journey with a scenic drive to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan (54 km, approximately 1 hour). After checking into your hotel and enjoying a delicious lunch, embark on an exploration of Thimphu’s highlights. Visit the majestic Tashichho Dzong, the administrative heart of Bhutan, before marveling at the world’s largest Buddha statue. Then, discover the vibrant local markets, where fresh vegetables and dairy products abound, offering a glimpse into the daily life of the Bhutanese people. If time permits, visit Changangkha Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most revered temples in Thimphu.
Day 2: Thimphu to Dochula – Punakha
After breakfast, drive to Dochula Pass (31 km, approximately 1 hour), where you will be greeted by stunning panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks. Here, you will see a collection of 108 stupas built to commemorate Bhutan’s victory over insurgents, and pay respects at the nearby Druk Wangyal Lhakhang. Continue your journey to Punakha (63 km, approximately 1.5 hours). After lunch, take a short hike to Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple located in Punakha district. This unique temple is famous for its association with phallus worship, an ancient Bhutanese practice believed to bring blessings of fertility.
Day 3: Punakha to Phobjikha
Set out early for the scenic drive to Phobjikha Valley (78 km, approximately 3.5 hours). Nestled amidst rolling hills, this serene valley offers a peaceful retreat in Bhutan’s central region. Visit Gangtey Goenpa, a 16th-century monastery perched high on a hill, offering breathtaking views of the valley below. The surrounding nature trails, winding through forests and past traditional villages, invite you to explore at your own pace, either on foot or by bike. Immerse yourself in the tranquility of this area and take time to unwind.
Day 4: Phobjikha to Bumthang
Prepare for a scenic yet long drive to Bumthang (179 km, approximately 8 hours). En route, enjoy a breathtaking drive through dense rhododendron and oak forests, crossing over the Pele La Pass (3,423 meters) and Yotong La Pass (3,425 meters). Stop to explore Chendebji Chorten, a stupa resembling Nepal’s Boudhanath, and visit the impressive Trongsa Dzong and its medieval watchtower in Trongsa, a fortress that has stood as a stronghold for centuries.
Day 5: Exploring Bumthang
Bumthang is known as the spiritual heart of Bhutan, with its many temples and monasteries. Spend the day exploring this picturesque valley, visiting key sites such as the Jakar Dzong, Kurjey Lhakhang, and Tamshing Lhakhang. The valley’s beauty and spiritual energy offer a unique opportunity to connect with Bhutan’s deep religious heritage.
Day 6: Bumthang to Mongar
Embark on an early drive to Mongar (184 km, approximately 8 hours), Bhutan’s first eastern district. Mongar, perched atop a hill, offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Explore this charming town and learn about the distinct cultural differences found in this more remote part of the country.
Day 7: Mongar to Lhuntse
Travel to Lhuntse (76 km, approximately 3 hours), a remote and beautiful district in the eastern part of Bhutan. Here, visit the towering 157-foot bronze statue of Guru Rinpoche, located atop a hill and overlooking a peaceful village. Continue your journey to Khoma Village, renowned for its exceptional handwoven textiles. In the evening, enjoy the warmth of Bhutanese hospitality with an overnight stay at a local homestay, where you can savor a traditional, home-cooked meal.
Day 8: Lhuntse to Tashigang
Drive from Lhuntse to Tashigang (167 km, approximately 7 hours), where you will return to Mongar before continuing on to Tashigang. This town offers a wonderful opportunity to explore Bhutan's eastern regions, with its unique cultural experiences and stunning landscapes.
Day 9: Day Excursion to Tashi Yangtse
Take a day trip to Tashi Yangtse (approximately 5 hours). Visit Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary, a serene haven for wildlife, particularly the rare black-necked cranes that migrate here during winter. Explore Chorten Kora, a massive stupa resembling the Boudhanath Stupa in Kathmandu, Nepal. After your exploration, return to Tashigang for the evening.
Day 10: Tashigang
Briefly visit the first college in Bhutan, which is located en route to Yongphula Domestic Airport. Fly back to Paro in the evening (domestic flight not included in the package price). The flight offers a stunning aerial view of Bhutan’s rugged mountains. Once back in Paro, take a leisurely stroll along the oldest street in the town, where traditional Bhutanese houses are complemented by quaint cafes and souvenir shops offering handmade crafts.
Day 11: Hike to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery)
Now fully acclimatized to the altitude, embark on a challenging yet rewarding hike to the legendary Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger’s Nest. This sacred site, perched dramatically on the side of a cliff, offers not only spiritual significance but also one of the most spectacular views in Bhutan. As you ascend through pine forests, your guide will share the fascinating Buddhist mythology surrounding the site, enriching your experience. Upon reaching the monastery, feel the serenity of the place, with the cold mountain air and the sound of a nearby waterfall cascading down the cliffs.
Day 12: Departure from Paro
On your final day in Bhutan, enjoy a relaxed morning before your departure. Take in the sights and sounds of Paro one last time before heading to the airport for your onward journey.
